The Most Common Myths About

Pelvic Floor

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Have Led To More Pain

If you’ve suffered with Pelvic Floor you have probably heard a wild range of stories and opinions from friends and family, and even outdated advice from doctors to rest and it will all fix itself which has left you confused, frustrated and unable to get long-term relief. Here are some of the most common Pelvic Floor myths people who visit our Arvada clinic have been told which has actually made their issues and much worse, and stopped them living the life they deserve.

MYTH #1 - YOU SHOULD BE DOING KEGELS
Probably the number one recommendation given to women of all ages and all stages of life is to just do Kegels, however Casey finds that so many women who walk through her clinic doors really need the opposite. If your pelvic floor is in more of a tightened or tense state, Kegels is not going to benefit you. What you actually need is to learn how to relax and lengthen your pelvic floor. If you’re suffering with a tense pelvic floor, doing Kegels all day every day can actually lead to worsening symptoms. This is because Kegels involve the contracting and releasing of pelvic muscles in order to strengthen them, but tightening the pelvic floor when it is already in an overly tense state is not recommended.
MYTH #2 - PELVIC FLOOR ISSUES OCCURE DUE TO AGE
This is simply not true. Age does not mean you should start to leak and not be able to sleep through the night. At any age, you should have the function of your pelvic floor on your side, be able to stay continent without wetting yourself, and be able to sleep through the night without getting up to pee multiple times. Additionally, a lot of women believe that if they’ve never had babies before, they can’t be suffering with pelvic floor dysfunction. Again, this is absolutely not true. Casey sees many women that have not had children yet that may want to address these things because they know they’re going into a pregnancy, or want to get pregnant in the near future. However, she also finds that high– level activity, or a lot of stress and anxiety can lead to pelvic floor issues that pre-exist pregnancy altogether. Pelvic floor issues can affect any and all women, and Casey can help you regardless of your situation.
MYTH #3 - C-SECTIONS RULE OUT PELVIC FLOOR ISSUES
Once again, this is simply not true because they still did carry a baby for nine months and therefore their pelvic floor took on the same kind of stresses, changes in the body and the extra weight throughout that whole journey just as someone who gives birth naturally would. But because they had the C-Section delivery over a vaginal delivery, they believe that their pelvic floor was not affected. One of Casey’s biggest pet peeves is that women are often not even referred by their doctors to pelvic floor therapy after a C -Section. They have had a major abdominal surgery, having been cut through their entire abdominal wall, and are then expected to go home and take care of a baby. They’re also told not to lift more than 10 pounds when their baby will most likely be 10 pounds in a couple of weeks. There is very little education about C-Section recovery, and it is such a huge surgery where rehabilitation can be benefitted by subsequent pelvic floor therapy. Casey’s intervention can guide people to a proper and effective recovery afterwards.
